The tragic death of actor Brad Renfro, who was found unresponsive in his Los Angeles home on January 15, has been caused by “acute heroin/morphine intoxication,” Los Angeles County Coroner’s office said on Friday.
“The final manner of death has been ruled an accident,” the coroner's office said.
Court spokesman Craig Harvey said Renfro had needle marks on his hands and although Renfro's friends believed he had been “clean” in the weeks before his death, it was possible he had shot up a large dose of heroin which his body had been accustomed to from prior use, Harvey said.
The former child star, who is famous for playing in movies including “Tom and Huck” and “The Client,” opposite Tommy Lee Jones and Susan Sarandon, had a history with substance abuse, which shaded his future career. According to friends of the 25-year-old, the actor was out drinking the night bebfore his death.
Two years ago, Renfro was arrested for allegedly trying to buy heroin and served 10 days in jail after pleading no-contest to driving while intoxicated and guilty to attempted possession of heroin. Additionally, Renfro was ordered to complete a drug treatment program and was placed on three years probation.
Following one of his court appearances, he talked to reporters about his drug rehabilitation, saying he was “tired of paying the consequences” for drinking and drug use and eager to get clean.
”It's definitely been an eye-opener,” he said of his rehabilitation program.
Other run-ins with the law included a 1998 charge of cocaine and marijuana possession, for which he avoided jail time in a plea deal, while in 2001, he was placed on probation and ordered to pay $4,000 for repairs to a 45-foot yacht he and a friend tried to steal in Florida in August 2000.
Renfro, who made appearances in more than a dozen films, also left behind a young son, a fact disclosed by his family at his funeral. The actor’s parents told TMZ that the boy lives with his mother in Japan and that Renfro recently spent time with his son before he died. “We did expect this because people didn't know he had a son,” his stepmother told TMZ. “But we're very thankful Brad got to see his son before he died.”
