Brad Pitt is negotiating to star alongside Mark Wahlberg in a new boxing movie titled “The Fighter,” according to Variety.
The “Fight Club” actor could have the chance to do some more on- screen boxing if all goes well and he joins the cast of “The Fighter.”
Variety reports that Pitt is in talks to join the biopic of the famous Irish-American boxer Mickey Ward. Mark Wahlberg will star as the one-time World Lightweight Champion, while Pitt will play Dicky Eklund, his older half-brother.
Eklund was himself a successful boxer before he became entangled in illegal activities and ended up in prison. He is also famed for having helped his younger sibling become a success in the ring.
After he was released from jail, Eklund trained Ward and helped him gain the light-welterweight world title he sought.
Darren Aronofsky, whose credits include “Pi,” “Requiem for a Dream” and the more recent “The Fountain,” is set to direct. Scott Silver, of “8 Mile” fame, is working on the latest draft of the screenplay.
There were different plans for Eklund’s character until recently. According to Variety, Matt Damon was set to play the boxing mentor but had to drop out because he “just had too many projects on his dance card to make the film on the schedule Paramount wanted.”
Wahlberg is reportedly already training to get into shape for the role. “The Fighter” is scheduled to begin production next fall.
Brad Pitt will next be seen in “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” which opens nationwide Friday, Sept. 21. The actor received the Best Actor award at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month.
Mark Wahlberg next appears on the big screen in “We Own the Night,” slated for an Oct. 12 release, alongside Joaquin Phoenix, Eva Mendes, and Robert Duvall.
He also stars in M. Night Shyamalan's “The Happening,” scheduled for a June 2008 release.
