Friday, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons revealed a
new cosmetic surgery that is said to reduce the rolls and bulges of fat that
form on women’s backs due to aging, allowing them to wear form-fitting outfits
without feeling self-conscious about their appearance.
Joseph Hunstad, a plastic surgeon who has completed, along
with his team, a number of twenty back lifts, has done a study on the
procedure, looking at seven women who had undergone it between 2001 and 2007.
The patients had excess skin up to even ten inches wide removed, the surgeons
performing a follow-up of about 22 months. The surgery, in all the case
studies, lasted approximately an hour. Doctors also informed that the surgical
scar was placed to be concealed by the patient’s brassiere, since the incision
that the procedure required was not a minimal one.
Results of Hunstad’s study showed that there were minimal
complications to the back lift, all seven women being permitted to increase
their level of activity within two weeks from the surgery. Moreover, feedback
from all the women was positive, thus encouraging the surgical team to deem the
procedure as a safe way to contour the middle and upper back.
During the past decade, the number of assorted cosmetical
surgeries has gone up by 457%, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic
Surgery informs. Currently, 91% of those who undergo such procedures are female
patients, but the percentage of men who had plastic surgery performed on them
has increased by 17% since last year, the Society added.
