Boy George, born George Alan O’Dowd, is one of the most controversial artists in the United Kingdom – although Amy Winehouse is coming strong from behind. The artist is one of the most famous English singer-songwriters, and he has been part of the English New Romantic movement, which started at the beginning of the 1980s.
His career as the lead vocalist of the group Culture Club helped bring androgyny international fame and recognition. His music has been described as belonging to the blue-eyed soul subgenre, with influences from the rhythm and blues and reggae spheres. During the 1990s and 2000s, his music, style and appearance took a turn for glam, and there were visible influences from music icons such as David Bowie and Iggy Pop.
After doing community service as part of a sentence, Boy George has had another run-in with the authorities. The singer was sentenced to server 15 months in prison, after he allegedly falsely imprisoned a male escort.
According to Boy George’s lawyer, it seems that the artist handcuffed a 29-year-old Norwegian male escort to a wall in order to find some photographs that Boy George believed the man had stolen.
These are not the only problems Boy George has had with the law during his life. In 1977, he was convicted as a juvenile, and in 1987, he was convicted for Class B drugs.
