A 3-year-old boy who was submerged in Lake Michigan after a gust of wind blew him into the
water, has made a complete recovery.
The boy was with his grandfather when a
strong wind swept him into the frigid waters of Lake
Michigan. The water was 42 degrees when he was blown in. His
grandfather jumped into the water after him. Within three minutes rescue teams
arrived, jumped in and saved them both. It took Brian Otto, a member of the Chicago
Fire Department’s Air and Sea Rescue team, about three minutes to rescue the
boy. He said he did just what he was trained to do.
“It was a difficult situation that day that
we dealt with,” said one rescue official. “We had a little bit of luck on our
side with the helicopter being where it was and the fact that the dive team was
out practicing that day.”
Doctors say the young boy has made a complete
recovery from the April 18 accident after being treated for around a month. The
boy, who only spoke Serbian when he entered the hospital, learned to speak
English from spending time with his nurses, doctors and therapists. Doctors at
the Rehabilitation Institute will be following his progress for some time.
“If there is such a thing as miracles, this
would be one,” said Dr. Leon Epstein, Chidren’s Memorial neurology chief.
