Police in California are searching for a woman whose 17-year-old
nephew allegedly escaped captivity and went to a gym with a shackle on his
ankle. Police believe the boy’s aunt was somehow involved.
The boy ran away from a Sacramento group home 15 to 18 months ago. The
teenager had been missing until Monday afternoon when he showed up seeking help
at a gym in Tracy, California, said Matt Robinson, spokesman
for the Tracy Police Department. Club employees found the boy, who was scared,
covered of bloody wounds and wearing only a pair of oversized boxer shorts, and
called police. The boy was terrified and he kept saying “hide me, hide me.” Officers
talked to the boy, who was then taken to a nearby hospital as he suffered from
bruising, cuts and malnutrition. Some witnesses said the boy had jumped over a
fence to get to the fitness center, according to local reports.
Police officers arrested Michael Luther
Schumacher, 34, and Kelly Layne Lau, 30, of Tracy on suspicion of conspiracy, torture,
kidnapping, child beating and false imprisonment.
The teen was held against his will at the
home of the suspects about 500 feet from the fitness center, Robinson told
reporters. Police officers found four other children belonging to Schumacher and
Lau, ages 1, 3, 7 and 9, at the couple’s home. They were taken by the San
Joaquin County Child Protective Services and showed no signs of abuse, Robinson
said.
Robinson suggested that the teen escaped
the foster home and somehow reunited with the aunt.
