Listening to your favorite tracks while walking on the street is really cool and energizing, but be very careful not to lose your focus on what’s around you. A 21-year-old student who was wearing earphones did the opposite and almost paid with his life.
The Boston College student walked in front of a Green Line train and was hit by a trolley. The incident occurred near Boston College, an MBTA spokesman said.
The student reportedly suffered injuries to his head and facial lacerations. He was taken by ambulance to Brigham and Women's Hospital, according to Joe Pesaturo, the spokesman for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. The student was reportedly conscious and talking when he was hospitalized.
The incident, which occurred at about 9:20 a.m., caused a part of Commonwealth Avenue to be shut down during the morning so investigations into the incident could be carried out. The student crossed the tracks east of the Boston College, Pesaturo said. The B-Line trolley was heading inbound.
The cause of the incident was most likely the fact that the student reportedly did not hear the trolley operator blow the horn, eyewitnesses said.
“The trolley operator did attempt to get his attention by blowing his horn,” Pesaturo said.
Due to the accident, riders are now being bused in both directions between Boston College Station and Washington Street.
