Ready or
not, this Friday November 14, James Bond is coming to town, or better yet, to a
theater near you, since the 22nd installment of the 007 franchise is
scheduled to be released in the United States.
So far, since
the production opened worldwide on November 1, “Quantum of Solace” has brought
in $200 million, which translates as a record amount for any James
Bond movie.
Despite this accomplishment that is by no means to be
downplayed, it seems that the film has fallen below par in terms of everything
else but profit, with critics deeming it as a lesser Bond movie than its
predecessors.
Moreover, as many have noted, the producers, apparently
unable to come up with maybe only a pinch of novelty for this 22nd sequel, have
found solace in treading the beaten road of the 1967 installment „Casino Royale.”
Apart from a plethora of explosions, a dead girlfriend Bond
mourns after (and that’s about all we find out about her during the movie),
some bad guys chasing and almost no storyline, „Quantum of Solace” has nothing
much to bring to the table.
No „Bond. James Bond,” no martinis, no state-of-the-art
gadgets, the movie lacks every trademark that has made both Ian Fleming’s
character and the Bond franchise stand the test of time.
Nevertheless, there is always Daniel Craig to show a little
skin and get the ladies let out a sigh, especially when he answers the door
shirtless to Inspector Mathis, portrayed by Giancarlo Giannini.
Still, if James Bond can save the world single-handedly,
unfortunately Daniel Craig cannot bear the burden of the entire movie on his
shoulders. And he might lose his license to thrill the audience.
So next time cover naked parts, knock down a few martinis
and let everybody know who you are: Bond. James Bond.
