The International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFCE) ranks Joey Chestnut from San Jose, California as the Number 1 eater after he added one more record by 45 pizza slices in 10 minutes at a contest in New York City last Sunday.
He beat 10 other contenders, including the previous pizza-eating record holder by shoving the pizza slices in his mouth and then right down his neck. "I might be on a liquid diet tonight," the 24-year-old construction manager said.
Chestnut said his breakfast before Sunday's contest consisted of coffee and a gallon of water to stretch his stomach muscles. So there’s a little bit of science behind such suicidal hobbies.
The 24-year-old officially entered the competitive-eating celebrity elite when he won Coney Island's July Fourth hot-dog eating contest in 2007. He took the title again this summer by ingurgitating 59 dogs in 10 minutes. He also won a contest in Tennessee last month by swallowing down 93 Krystal hamburgers in 8 minutes.
Among his other achievements are eating 182 chicken wings in 30 minutes, 47 grilled cheese sandwiches in 10 minutes and drinking a gallon of milk in 41 seconds.
His hefty competitor is Patrick Bertoletti, the previous pizza eating record holder with 22 slices in 10 minutes. He is ranked second by the same International Federation of Competitive Eating.
