Bomb Truck Detonated at Israel-Gaza Border, Militant Killed

A truck loaded with explosives was detonated on Thursday at the Erez crossing on the border between Israel and Gaza. Atypically, the only victim of the explosion was the Palestinian suicide bomber that carried out the attack, authorities said.

The attack was claimed by the Islamic Jihad and the Al Aksa Martyrs Brigades according to The New York Times. When it claimed responsibility for the attack, the Islamic Jihad also said the truck contained hundreds of pounds of explosives.

There were two militants in the truck, but both managed to get out of the vehicle before the explosion and escaped, Israeli military informed.

Airplanes of the Israeli military attacked another vehicle that was driving out of Gaza according to a military intelligence Web site based in Jerusalem - DEBKAfile.com. It is not clear whether the air borne attack was linked to the suicide bomb attack.

The area where the truck exploded was sealed off by military personnel and declared a military zone, The United Press International reported.

In the meantime, Israeli military and Palestinian militants exchanged fire at another border crossing – Sufa. According to DEBKAfile.com, the border crossing was closed by the Israeli military.

Through the Sufa crossing the Gaza residents received their basic supplies.
