According to police, a man from Brooklyn
who is a suspect for having pipe bombs and firearms at his home said that he
was involved in acts of vandalism against Jewish community.
His lawyer Adrian Lesher, said in his defense that Ivan
Ivanov is Jewish.
His house was raided by police on Sunday after he shot his
left index finger and called for their help. They’ve found there seven line
pipe bombs, other devices for making a bomb, a pistol, a shotgun, crossbow and
bulletproof vest.
Investigators were trying to figure out if Ivanov wanted to
use the weapons against the synagogues and other houses, Associated Press
reports.
Ivanov declared that he planned to use the bombs for a
fishing trip, to detonate it underwater.
His computer was seized by police and its files were being
searched.
In September he was a suspect for the anti-Semitic spray
paintings on three houses, two cars and two synagogues. He wasn’t charged, but
after the weapons were found in his apartment he linked himself to those cases
and was detained. He was charged for hate crimes.
On Monday, Ivanov pleaded not guilty at the arraignment on
charges of harassment, 46 counts of criminal mischief and criminal possession.
His bail was set at $300,000, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney's
office.
Lesher said that his client "basically led police to
the apartment in a situation that was almost calculated."
He added that Ivanov is a linguist and a Jewish.
"It makes it less likely that he is a threat. He is an
educated person," he said.
Police wanted to make contact with Ivanov’s roommate a Columbia professor,
Michael Clatts, a medical anthropologist and also a researcher for AIDS in the
1980s.
Police official did not believe that the professor knew about
the arsenal due to the fact that he was out of the country.
On January 25 Ivanov is due to a court hearing.
