A bomb was detonated on a Sri Lankan commuter train during the rush hour. The military said seven people were killed in the powerful blast and 70 other were wounded.
The bomb exploded in the train which had left Colombo for Panadura in the Dehiwala station, a suburb of the Sri Lankan capital. Many of the victims were women, including one who was pregnant, authorities said.
Tamil Tiger militants are held responsible for the balst according to military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara. The bomb attack is the latest in a long series of similar attack in the public transportation. Most of the attacks are blamed on the Tamil separatist, but they customarily deny any involvement.
Actually, three days ago, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) militants accused the government forces for an explosion carried out in the Tiger-controlled territory.
There have been two other attempts to carry out similar attacks, but the military said its experts defused two bombs which had been set on buses during the weekend.
The latest attack blamed on the Tamil Tiger militants prompted Sri Lanka’s President to give his promise that the separatists will be crushed.
"I will not stop till terrorism is defeated," President Mahinda Rajapaksa told a meeting with media officials.
"No one should have expectations that there will be a letup in the battle against terrorism because of the frenzied attacks" said Rajapaksa in a statement released by his office.
The president said the Tamil Tigers increased their attacks on civilians aiming to divert the attention of the government from the successful military operations against the LTTE in northern Sri Lanka.
