One of the most influential figures of the 20th century, a man that luckily lives in the same times as we do, Bob Dylan, released a three-CD expanded edition of "Tell Tale Signs: Rare and Unreleased 1989-2006,” a musical experience that fills the gaps and makes understand his music even better.
The album is the eighth of Dylan's "Bootleg Series'' of outtakes, demos, live versions, soundtracks and unreleased songs, and is not a mere desperate cry for attention and a simple let’s-remix-my old-hits-and-release-them-again, like some singers do, but a collection of never-before heard pieces that were recorded, but never released or were briefly performed live in low-key concerts. Some of them were not considered right at the time, but just like old wine, we discover them twenty years later and they feel even better than what we already knew.
Just like the previous releases in the “Bootleg Series” brought to light hidden gems, such as Blind Willie McTell,'' originally recorded in 1983 and inexplicably left off "Infidels,” “Tell Tale” brings out "Red River Shore,'' originally recorded for "Time Out of Mind,'' a seven-minute tour de force that seems even better than the songs Dylan decided to include on that 30th studio album, released in 1997.
Recording sessions for some of his most praised albums, like “Oh Mercy,” “World Gone Wrong,” “Time Out of Mind,” and “Modern Times” let all those millions of Dylan fans to take a peek into the mind of the artist and his creative vision. There are a number of soundtrack contributions, including 'Cross the Green Mountain' from the movie “Gods and Generals,” as well as unreleased live tracks from 1989 through 2006.
The collection also includes a track from an abandoned album Dylan had started to record with David Bromberg in 1992, and Dylan's duet with Ralph Stanley, “The Lonesome River”.
“Tell Tale Signs” comes in a two-CD pack, as well as a deluxe edition of the album, including a 150-page book and a bonus disc of tracks on top of the regular edition. The true Dylan fans who pre-ordered the deluxe set directly from Bob Dylan's website also received an exclusive 7" vinyl.
Among his impressive collection of awards, including numerous Grammys for both rock and folk, Dylan was also included in the Time magazine “100: The Most Important People of the Century,” where he was called "master poet, caustic social critic and intrepid, guiding spirit of the counterculture generation". In 2004, he was ranked number two in Rolling Stone magazine's list of "Greatest Artists of All Time".
Many legendary musicians all over the world have acknowledged Dylan's influence upon their own work, in writing, performing and attitude, including Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Bono, Bryan Ferry, Syd Barrett, Paul Simon, Nick Cave, Keith Richards, Patti Smith, Jack White, Joni Mitchell, and Tom Waits.
