One of the newest causes of car crashes is also one of your most indispensable devices – I am, of course, talking about your cell phone. People have started to own multiple cell phones, which now have cameras, MP3 players, MP4 players, Internet, e-mail, music editors and basically anything you can imagine. Teenagers, at least, are obsessed with their cell phones, as sales have proven so far – and if statistics don’t impress you, just take a walk down the street or go to the nearest mall. Teenagers will be either talking on their cell phones or they will be texting their friends.
The increased popularity of cell phones and the young age at which teenagers are allowed to drive in the United States seems like the perfect recipe for highway disasters. Statistics have shown that about 10% of teenagers talk or text while they’re behind the wheel, while 6% of all drivers have the same habits. It’s useless to say how holding your phone in your hand can considerably hinder your driving skills, not to mention the attention you pay when you text someone – even if you can text without looking at the phone, supposedly because you’re used with the keys, you still love precious seconds from keeping your eyes on the road when you attempt to send the message to the right recipient.
Because of this dangerous rising trend, researchers from the University of Utah have decided to develop a Bluetooth device that can turn off your cell phone while you’re behind the wheel. If approximations are correct, the device – called “Key2SafeDriving” may be on sale in the United States as soon as 6 months from now.
