Blu-ray patent holders are encouraging companies to create more such products by offering them a one-stop-shop license solution that is cheap and easy to adopt. Sony, Panasonic and Philips have announced the creation of an independent licensing company with offices in the United States, Asia, Europe and Latin America, that will represent the interests of all Blu-ray patent holders.
No more will product makers need to run in different places to get their licenses, and this new solution will prove useful for both licensees and licensors, as Gerald Rosenthal, the new CEO of the licensing company, has pointed out.
The best part for Blu-ray producers is that by combining all these licenses into one organism, the royalty rates they are expected to pay will decrease by a whopping 40 percent for individual Blu-ray Disc, DVD and CD format licenses.
The announcement also includes the fees for the new product licenses, and this is what they look like, according to the official announcement:
The fees for the new product licenses are US$9.50 for a Blu-ray Disc™ player and US$14.00 for a Blu-ray Disc™ recorder. The per disc license fees for Blu-ray Disc™ will be US$0.11 for a read only disc, US$0.12 for a recordable disc and US$0.15 for a rewritable disc.
All patent holders have been encouraged to participate in the new licensing initiative, either as licensors or as shareholders. While no precise date for when this will start has been given, it has been estimated that by mid-2009 the new licensing system should be ready.
