Blockbuster released its new service, presenting users with a very exciting offer. The company will deliver movies directly to the TV through its MediaPoint set top box, developed by 2Wire.
The service is taking a clear shot at Netflix’s offer, looking to win back some of its market shares. Blockbuster’s new strategy sounds quite appealing, as it demands a upfront pay of $100 that includes 25 movies and the MediaPoint box and from that point on there is no subscription fee, with users paying only for what they rent. Movie rentals will begin at $2 and there will remain available for 30 days; also once the play button is pressed, users will have 24 hours to finish watching the movie.
The MediaPoint box has Wi-Fi (b and g), ethernet, HDMI out along with composite and optical and it will work with Hi-Def movies.
"The player is simple to use, delivers DVD quality video, and there's no monthly subscription commitment," Jim Keyes, chairman and chief executive of Blockbuster, said in a statement, apearing extremely excited with the company’s offer.
The number of titles is rather limited for now, but it is expected to grow over the next few months. Also, the company announced that the service will be available for Blu-ray players, the PS3 and the Xbox 360.
Another competitor for Blockbuster and Netflix is also Apple TV, available since 2007, which connects via the Internet to Apple's iTunes music and video store, allowing users to rent movies and TV shows.
