In an interview with Gamasutra,
Frank Pearce, founding member and senior vice president of product development
for Blizzard offers some hints about a new game.
Talking about company’s workforce, Pearce explained that
Blizzard is working on three projects.
"Our global headcount is 2,700," said Pearce,
"And most of that is customer service for World of Warcraft! In
terms of development staff it’s probably around 350. World of Warcraft
is about 135 people, 40 for Starcraft II, 40 for team 3, our cinematics
team is about 85 guys. Then there’s sound and Q/A and that sort of thing."
When asked about the mysterious team 3, Pearce refused to
elaborate and he only said that: "Team 3 is working on something really
awesome. I can’t give you any hints, but it’s totally awesome."
Pearce’s comment has been followed by a stir of
speculations. According to some sources, Blizzard is working on StarCraft Ghost,
but in an update issued later on Gamasutra dismissed the rumor.
If it’s not StarCraft Ghost, then it’s surely Diablo 3, the
Blizzard fans concluded. Indeed rumors about a new Diablo game have been
floating around the web even from 2002.
Diablo II, released in 2000 four years after the original Diablo
game, become an instant hit and Blizzard sold close to 17 millions copies.
One year later, Blizzard released an expansion, Diablo II:
Lord of Destruction and ever since the fans are waiting for the next
installment.
In 2003, some of the people who created Diablo II, such as Blizzard
North Vice President Bill Roper and producer Kenneth Williams founded a new
game company, Flagship Studios, which is developing HellGate: London, a RPG with some first-person shooter
elements.
But back to Pearce’s announcement! Of course, there is a
good possibility that Blizzard is working on a totally new game.
Next month, Blizzard will have its annual meeting,
Blizzconn, and maybe they will reveal new details about this mysterious title. Until
then let’s hope that Diablo 3 is coming!
