It’s no secret that Blizzard Entertainment’s World of
Warcraft MMORPG has been constantly gaining fans in the four years since its
launch, breaking record after record. Now, in anticipation for the Wrath of the
Lich King expansion that is scheduled to launch on November 13, Blizzard
announced reaching another milestone: 11 million people across the globe play
WoW.
“It’s been very rewarding to see gamers around the world
continue to show such strong support for World of Warcraft,” said Mike
Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We remain fully
committed to responding to that enthusiasm with a high-quality, constantly
evolving game experience.”
The announcement came 10 months after Blizzard revealed a
round figure of World of Warcraft gamers: 10 million, and just little before
the expansion is set to come out. Just in time, we might add, as many players that
have already reached end-game content were eagerly waiting for something new.
Wrath of the Lich King is the second expansion set for World
of Warcraft, after the Burning Crusade, which was launched in 2007. The first
expansion became an instant sensation and the bestselling PC game of last year,
helping Blizzard add another million players in a matter of months.
World of Warcraft has gained its share of popularity on all
continents, but nothing beats Asia (at least half of the 11 million subscribers
are from Asia). Furthermore, as much as it has been acclaimed, it has also been
blamed for turning kids into addicted players.
All in all, one thing is for sure: nothing beats the World
of Warcraft popularity at the moment, and as soon as WOTLK comes out, we will
probably see more records being broken. Until then, remember: “Take all things
in moderation, even World of Warcraft.”
