Blast Near U.S. Embassy Car Kills Three in Beirut

According to a senior Lebanese security official, at least three people were killed on Tuesday in blast which targeted a U.S. diplomatic car in Lebanon’s capital, Beirut.

Another U.S. passenger was injured in the explosion.

According to Reuters, at least 16 people were injured in the blast which occurred in the predominantly Christian Dora-Karantina neighborhood of Beirut.

Sources told that no American personnel were killed.

The report wasn’t confirmed by the U.S embassy.

According to witnesses, gray smoke rose into the sky as ambulances rushed to the site of the accident.

One correspondent of Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation who was there said that he saw at least one body charred. He also said that a person was wounded in a car and that it was an American Embassy employee, USA Today reports.

Television photos showed damaged cars, twisted metal and damaged buildings. A rifle was being pulled out of a SUV by security agents.

According to witnesses, the explosion was heard loudest in the Dora suburb.

Lebanon has seen in the last three years over 30 explosions which targeted anti-Syrian politicians and journalists.

Two U.N peacekeepers were injured in a bomb attack in southern Lebanon.

On December 12 Lebanese army Maj. Gen. Francois Hajj along with two other people were killed in a car bombing in Baabda, a suburb of Beirut.

The explosion on Tuesday came just as U.S. President George W. Bush continued his tour in Middle East with a visit in Saudi Arabia.
