BlackBerry Announces Application Storefront

Research in Motion has announced on Tuesday that a new, online application storefront will be created, in order to allow BlackBerry users to download applications for different BlackBerry phone models. The main purpose of this is to make life easier, as BlackBerry users will be able to search and download any application directly to their phones. BlackBerry applications were available for years, the problem was that they were scattered around different sites and this made them relatively hard to find. BlackBerry applications could be found on sites like Handango, but there is clearly the need of creating an online BlackBerry applications store.

Such stores have been available for iPhone users as they already have Apple App Store and there is even an online store for the G1, the Android Market. Research in Motion is planning to launch the application storefront in March 2009 and have announced that developers can start submitting different content starting from December. Interestingly, Research in Motion will decide if a certain application is suited for the BlackBerry and only such applications, approved by Research in Motion, will be found on the storefront.

Also, Research in Motion has declared that they will be closely working with PayPal and that developers will receive 80% of the revenue their application generate, while the rest, 20%, will go to Research in Motion and different carriers. BlackBerry users will be able to download applications for AOL, MySpace, Facebook, Flickr, Gmail and many others. Also, with the upcoming release of the new BlackBerry Storm, the number of Blackberry applications is expected to rise significantly.
