Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 horror classic “The Birds” will benefit from a remake directed by Martin Campbell and starring Naomi Watts.
Variety announces that Universal is planning a remake of Daphne du Maurier’s short story “The Birds” which inspired iconic director Alfred Hitchcock’s adaptation of the same name.
Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller will produce through their Platinum Dunes shingle, the trade paper adds, while Peter Guber and Cathy Schulman are producing for Mandalay Pictures.
Stiles White and Juliet Snowden have penned a version of the script that is still being developed and it is possible for additional screenwriters to be brought aboard.
Australian actress Naomi Watts will play a role made famous by Tippi Hedren (Melanie Griffith’s mother). The actress received the Golden Globe as the most promising newcomer of 1964, sharing it with Ursula Andress and Elke Sommer. Hedren co-starred in another of Hitchcock’s films, the 1964 psychological thriller “Marnie,” alongside Sean Connery.
Naomi Watts will next be seen in Warner Independent's “Funny Games,” alongside Tim Roth. She is currently filming “The International” after which she begins work on First Look's adaptation of Amy Sutherland's “Kicked, Bitten and Scratched: Life and Lessons at the World's Premiere School for Exotic Animal Trainers,” per Variety.
Director Martin Campbell is reportedly attached to Fox's “Unstoppable” and crime thriller “36” at Paramount. His most recent project is the 2006 James Bond blockbuster “Casino Royale.”
Mandalay's David Zelon and Jonathan Krauss will oversee for Mandalay, while Scott Bernstein is overseeing the pic for Universal, reports Variety.
Naomi Watts and her boyfriend of two years, Liev Schreiber, welcomed their first child earlier this summer. Son Alexander Pete was born on July 26, 2007 in Los Angeles. Watts and Schreiber co-starred in last year's “The Painted Veil.”
