BioWare announced a new strategy plan for their Mass Effect game
campaign, after a wave of negative feedback was received on their plan to
demand players a re-authentication every ten days.
The efforts to tackle piracy attempts were previously focused
on the games The Sims and also BioShock, their fans receiving the new security
measures rather upset. Company officials initially thought of a
re-authentication for the game every ten days with an EA server, in order for
it to work properly.
The announcement was followed by a hostile reaction from the
fans and BioWare Community manager Jay Watamaniuk used one of the company’s
official forums to announce the game’s new protection requirements. Mass Effect
fans will only have to authenticate their game on their first installation.
Purchasing one disk will allow users to install the game on
no more than three computers, which might be another reason for future
complaints.
"BioWare has always
listened very closely to its fans and we made this decision to ensure we are
delivering the best possible experience to them," Mr. Watamaniuk said in
his post. He also added: "To all the fans including our many friends in
the armed services and internationally who expressed concerns that they would
not be able re-authenticate as often as required, EA and BioWare want you to
know that your feedback is important to us."
Even though the general reaction
was on a disapproving note, the game companies have every reason to be
concerned about game-piracy and surely there will be many other attempts to
bring the number of pirated game copies to a minimum.
