Billy Ray Cyrus, father to the American child actress, singer, and songwriter Miley Cyrus, finally made his first TV comments regarding his daughter’s controversial pictures in the June issue of Vanity Fair.
The Grammy Award-nominated country singer told show anchor Meredith Vieira that he wasn’t aware that “they were going to strip her [Miley] down and wrap her in a blanket.” Billy Ray was promoting his NBC show Nashville Star.
The country singer said he never intended to complain and remembered his father’s saying which he thought he fitted with this controversy:
"The more you stomp in poop, the more it stinks," People Magazine reported.
He did say that he was surprised when he saw the seemingly topless shot of his 15-year-old superstar daughter, but “hey, that's life. Stuff happens."
Billy Ray said that he was surprised when he found out about the complaints that surfaced once the photos became public, but he described his reaction on this matter very simple:
"Okay, this happened. We gotta deal with it."
The multi-platinum selling recording artist said that he couldn’t prevent Miley’s backless photo from being taken because he just wasn’t there at that time. Billy Ray was working on his show and also played in Washington for the troops who had returned from Iraq.
At that point, Miley Cyrus apologized for the photos, which were taken by Annie Leibovitz.
When asked about the photo of him and Miley, which looked more like a photo taken by a boyfriend and girlfriend rather than a father and daughter, Billy Ray laughed and said that was just a “daddy who loves his daughter a whole lot."
