There was historical symmetry Friday night as former Beatle
Paul McCartney joined Billy Joel on stage to perform during the last concert at
Shea Stadium, after holding the first gig ever at the venue some four decades
ago as one of the Fab Four.
British icons The Beatles played the first concert ever at
the Shea Stadium (short for William A. Shea Municipal Stadium) in 1965, when
some of us were not even born yet, to a record audience of 55,600.
Former Beatle Paul McCartney joined Billy Joel on stage
Friday night, for what will now be known as the last concert played at Shea
Stadium before being demolished – and while he remembered the “blast” he and
fellow Beatles John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr had that night of
“long ago,” the musician was in excellent shape and treated the audience to a
wonderful concert.
The stadium, which has hosted a plethora of concerts from
iconic artists and bands such as Jethro Tull, The Who, The Clash, Simon and
Garfunkel, The Police, Rolling Stones, Elton
John and Eric Clapton, was brimming with fans.
Friday night, Billy Joel had some very special guests for
his listeners, just as he did Wednesday, when the first of two “Last Play at
Shea” shows took place. Country star Garth Brooks sang Joel’s “Shameless,” while
Steven Tyler of Aerosmith performed “Walk This Way.”
Roger Daltrey of the Who was another blast from the past
(from 1982 to be more precise), as he sang “My Generation.”
Wednesday night, the audience was regaled with performances
from Tony Bennett (“New York State of Mind”) and John Mayer (playing guitar on
“This Is the Time”) among others.
Also Wednesday, Billy Joel paid tribute to the Beatles by treating
the audience with his own rendition of “A Hard Day’s Night” and “Please Please Me.”
Friday, concertgoers got a taste of the real thing, when Paul
McCartney sang “I Saw Her Standing There” and “Let It Be.”
