Billy Joel was joined by some special fellow musicians Wednesday
night for a farewell concert at Shea Stadium in the Bronx,
the first of two he will perform for a historical site which is to be
demolished in the near future.
Billy Joel regaled fans with all his classic Wednesday
night, as he put force and passion in his performance, the first of two “Last
Play at Shea” shows, the final concerts there before it is dismantled.
The first concert played at the Shea Stadium (short for William
A. Shea Municipal Stadium) was that of the Fab Four, British icons The Beatles,
in 1965, to a record audience of 55,600. The Piano Man did his best to make the
stadium’s last concert memorable and succeeded, if we are to rely on reports.
Other artists to have left their mark on concertgoers’
psyches through performances at the Shea Stadium are Jethro Tull in July 1976, The
Who, The Clash, Simon and Garfunkel, The Police and the Rolling Stones in the
1980s, as well as acts such as Elton John and Eric Clapton in the early 1990s.
Billy Joel was joined on stage by well-selected guests, such
as Tony Bennett for “New York State of Mind” or John Mayer playing guitar on “This
Is the Time.”
Other songs he performed were “Angry Young Man,” “The
Entertainer,” “Zanzibar,”
“Miami 2017” and a plethora of others his fans have grown to hold dear over the
years.
Joel also paid tribute to the Beatles by treating the audience
with his own rendition of “A Hard Day’s Night” and “Please Please Me.”
