Bill Oefelein, The Astronaut Involved in NASA Love Triangle, To Leave Agenc

Bill Oefelein, the astronaut who was involved in a relationship with Lisa Nowak, will leave NASA on June 1. Four months ago, Lisa Nowak started a huge scandal after a bizarre diaper-journey across five states to confront her rival, Oefelein's girlfriend, Air Force Capt. Colleen Shipman. Nowak was caught on Feb. 5 at the Orlando, Fla., airpot and she was charged Feb. 6 with attempted kidnapping, battery and destruction of evidence.

Oefelein, 42, a father of two children, flew his first space mission in December, piloting Discovery on an 13-day International Space Station assembly flight. Oefelein, who is divorced, had a romantic relationship with Nowak, but he broke it off to see Shipman, who is stationed at Patrick Air Force Base.

“The Navy and NASA mutually agreed to end his detail,» said NASA spokesman Jim Rostohar. «NASA has determined that Commander Oefelein's detail is no longer required for the purposes it was originally granted.” Rostohar declined to comment on the reason behind the decision.

Lisa Nowak was released by NASA from astronaut corps in March and she is now working at the Naval Air Station Corpus Christi in Texas. Oefelein was informed of the decision to end his detail on Wednesday, Rostohar added.
