U.S. comedian Bill Murray's wife of eleven years has filed for divorce citing shocking reasons such as abusive behavior, drug and alcohol addiction, as well as frequent abandonment by the former Saturday Night Live star, Charleston.net reported.
According to legal papers filed by Jennifer Butler Murray on May 12 in Charleston County, South Carolina, the couple reportedly married 11 years ago and have four children together but have been living separate lives for over a year.
The petition specified that in 2006, Butler moved with her children to Sullivan's Islands, South Carolina, "due to defendant's adultery, addiction to marijuana and alcohol, abusive behavior, physical abuse, sexual addictions, and frequent abandonment."
The complaint, which doesn't specify instances of Murray's alleged marijuana or alcohol use, alleges he would often leave without telling his wife and says he "travels overseas where he engages in public and private altercations and sexual liaisons."
Murray left "threatening voice messages" on his wife’s answer machine and refused to seek treatment for his adultery, the papers further allege.
Moreover, the couple's latest confrontation happened after they split, in November 2007, when " the defendant hit her in the face and then told her she was 'lucky he didn't kill her," Butler's petition added.
Claiming Murray's "violent, abusive and erratic behavior" caused the marriage to break, Butler sought a restraining order against the "Ghostbusters" star saying she no longer feels safe around him.
Murray's soon to be ex-wife, who insisted that throughout their marriage she was a "good, true, devoted and faithful wife" who maintained "a good home for her husband and four children" requested sole custody of their children Caleb, 15, Jackson, 12, Cooper, 11, and Lincoln, who turns seven on Friday (May 30).
She also urged the court to look into the couple's prenuptial agreement, which waives their right to alimony, in order to determine whether it's still valid and enforceable. However, the agreement does state that once their divorce is finalized, Murray has to pay his wife $7 million within 60 days.
Although he initially refused to comment on the issue, Murray's lawyer released a statement saying, "Bill Murray is deeply saddened by the breakup of his marriage. He and his wife are loving parents and they are committed to the best interests of their children and Mr. Murray has asked that the public respect his privacy at this difficult time."
