Bill Gates No Longer the World’s Richest Man?

This is the question induced by a Mexican online magazine claiming Microsoft founder Bill Gates is now second to Mexican telecommunications mogul Carlos Slim on the list of the world’s wealthiest persons.

US magazine Forbes has named Bill Gates the very richest man on earth for the past 13 years. Sentido Comun, a Mexican online magazine, has done some calculations of its own and chooses to contradict Forbes.

According to Sentido Comun, Mexican businessman Carlos Slim, who controls Telefonos de Mexico (Telmex), Telcel and America Movil, was worth $67.8 billion at the end of June.

Bill Gates, founder and Chairman of Microsoft, was worth $59.2 billion at the time, according to Sentido Comun’s estimations.

A Forbes representative stated Tuesday that the magazine updates its annual list of the world’s wealthiest on a daily basis and that Gates remains No.1.

Sentido Comun reported that Slim's increase was based on the 26.5 percent rise in the shares of America Movil in the second quarter, and on the April-June appreciation by 11.1 per cent of the titles of Telefonos de Mexico.

Slim, 67, was second to Gates, 51, in March 2007 on Forbes’ famous list, with $53.1 billion.
