On Saturday Pakistani government allowed former Prime
Minister Benazir Bhutto to leave her home after a day of house arrest for in
order to prevent her from attending the rally. The Pakistani government was
urged by the U.S.
to put an end to the state of emergency fearing that it will hurt the fight
against Islamic extremism.
Still the police prevented her from visiting Iftikhar
Muhammad Chaudhry, the ousted chief who has been detained by president
Musharraf.
The police chief Naeem Iqbal said: “She is now free to go
anywhere,” the Washington Times quoted.
After she was set free Bhutto visited the group of
journalists that were protesting against the government who shutdown independent
television stations. She also attended a reception that was given by her party
at the Parliament for foreign diplomats.
According the New York Times to President Pervez Musharraf
had a meeting with military corps commanders on Saturday. The commanders are
the President’s source of power and he would be weak without their support. In
this case Musharraf would be forced to resign.
This comes a day after Bhutto was detained in her own house
by the police in order to prevent her from attending the rally in Rawalpindi
planned by her to protest against the state of emergency proclaimed a week ago
by Musharraf. About 8,000 police officers blocked the site of the park where
the rally was supposed to be held.
The visits held by Bhutto were unannounced in fear that she
will be stopped by the police.
She was blocked to enter the house of chief of justice,
Chaudry. She addressed a small group that was gathered there saying: “He is the
chief justice. He is the real chief justice,” Reuters reports.
The Pakistan People’s Party, Bhutto’s party said that the
rally planned for Tuesday from Lahore
to Islamabad will be held.
Today the attorney general of Pakistan
said that the state of emergency would last for another month.
