Bhutto Calls for Every Pakistani to Join Protest March

On Monday former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto urged Pakistanis to take part in the protest planned for Tuesday from Lahore to Islamabad, Reuters reports. She vowed to go ahead with the protest even if the police will try to prevent it.

Musharraf drew many critics when he declared the state of emergency on November 3.

Bhutto plans to hold a 3-4 day long procession of vehicles from Lahore to Islamabad in order to ask Musharraf to end the state of emergency and restore the constitution, to quit his post as army chief, and to free the detained lawyers.

She was warned by the police that they had received information that she could be the target of another suicide bomb attack in the eastern city of Lahore. In a visit at the tomb of renowned 19th century poet Mohammad Iqbal Bhutto said: “I know it is dangerous. I don’t want to take a dangerous path, but I ask myself, what is the alternative and how can we save our country? We appeal to all people, including from other parties and minorities, women and children, to take part in this long march.”

Bhutto was the target of a suicide attack on October 18, at her homecoming after eight years of exile. The attack left 140 people dead.

On Sunday Musharraf announced that he will hold the elections on January 9 but he didn’t say when the state of emergency will be lifted. He also said that he will drop his uniform, but didn’t say when it will happen.

Although Bhutto declared to be satisfied with Musharraf announcement, still her demands were far from being fulfilled.

On Sunday she declared that she was open to negotiations.

Almost 200 police officers were guarding Bhutto’s house in Lahore after they received the information regarding a possible attack. Snipers were on rooftops and steel barricades were blocking the road.

When she left her home dozens of police vehicles escorted her.

Farzana Raja, a spokesman for Pakistan People’s Party, vowed to have the “freedom march” and to fight against the authorities if they will try to stop it.

He said: “If police try to stop us, in every town and district of Punjab, there will be a battlefield between PPP activists and police,” Reuters quotes.
