Beyonce Knowles will show no cleavage in Malaysia but not because she will be covering up to comply with religious demands – because she canceled the show.
A statement on Beyonce’s website from promoter Pineapple Concerts announces that a Nov. 1 concert in Kuala Lumpur has been cancelled due to a “scheduling conflict” and promises that “Beyonce is looking forward to performing for all her fans in Kuala Lumpur in the near future.”
Media reports however say otherwise. The concert in Malaysia allegedly would have been possible had Beyonce agreed to cover up her bootylicious curves while on stage.
The New York Daily News says in a report that radical Muslim students demanded that the singer wear some extra clothes during her gig, as nudity is frowned upon in Malaysia.
Pineapple Concerts Chairman Razlan Ahmad Razali said he was “disappointed and frustrated” with the cancellation, reports the Daily News, and emphasized the clash between Islamic strictures and Beyonce’s stage persona.
Earlier this year, former No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani faced the same restrictions in order to perform in the country. Gwen however opted for what she called a “major sacrifice” and covered up.
Female performers are not allowed to reveal any skin at all from neckline to their knees.
“The Beyoncé Experience,” the 26-year-old’s current tour, has taken the former Destiny Child across the world. This would have been her first concert in Malaysia.
She will instead play in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Nov. 1. “Though Indonesia is also a Muslim country, it doesn't have all these issues that we have,” the Daily News quoted Razali as saying. “She can perform as she likes there.”
According to E! Online, news of Beyonce’s upcoming performance in Kuala Lumpur was mighty upsetting for many, as the National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students, and other groups, urged the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage to stop the concert from taking place.
