Disney’s "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" is a box office hit. The family movie cashed in an estimated $29 million and made it to the top box office spot this weekend.
"Beverly Hills Chihuahua" is Disney’s best opening ever for an October flick. The movie plaid in 3,215 theaters and did extremely well for a movie of this kind in a month during which is normally reserved for the gore fans of horror films.
The producers of the film that features the voices of Drew Barrymore and George Lopez were expecting a return of $20 million to $25 million in its first weekend.
"We're ecstatic. We don't think we could have done any better with a market that had seven movies opening," said Disney president Chuck Viane.
It was a very good weekend for movie producers. The number of moviegoers was higher than usual as the weekend grossed a total of $95.4 million for the top 12 movies. The revenue is 42% higher than during the same weekend of 2007.
This weekend’s No. 2 was DreamWorks/Paramount thriller "Eagle Eye" with an estimated $17.7 million. The movie cashed in a total of $54.6 million in its first 10-days of release.
Comedy "Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist" is also doing pretty well as it earned approximately $12 million from 2,421 screens. The film staring Michael Cera and Kat Dennings is our No. 3 for the weekend that just passed.
"It’s a very good start for a movie that both critics and audiences really loved," said a Sony official.
The top five was completed by Richard Gere’s “Nights in Rodanthe” and western “Appaloosa.”
