Best Buy has announced that it will create a "pilot" network of airport kiosks which will dispense various gadgets at several U.S. airports. The vending machines will provide travelers cell phone and computer accessories, digital cameras, portable data storage devices, headphones, travel adapters, electronic chargers and other gadgets.
The first test locations for the "Best Buy Express" program will be airports in Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and San Francisco, starting Sept. 1.
The kiosks will be created by specialized company ZoomSystems, which also makes automated stores for Apple’s iPod, Sony, Rosetta Stone and Macy’s.
The initiative is probably going to be a success, as it will provide air travelers with either replacements for stuff they forgot, lost or were robbed of, or with gadgets they figured at the last moment that they need on their trips.
Best Buy is currently the largest specialty retailer of consumer electronics in the United States and Canada, accounting for more than 20 percent of the market.
It was founded in 1966 by Richard M. Schulze and business partner James Wheeler as Sound of Music, an audio specialty store, in Saint Paul, Minnesota. It currently employs nearly 140,000 people and is headed by Brad Anderson, CEO & Vice Chairman. Richard M. Schulze, the company's co-founder, remains Chairman.
