Behind Tina Fey's 'Spot On' Sarah Palin Impersonation

Although Tina Fey made her brilliant performance as the GOP vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin on "Saturday Night Live" look easy, the team behind her looks would beg to differ.

Fey's natural resemblance to Sarah Palin was enhanced by a team of professional stylists, and a wig put together by a group of wig makers and colorists.

"A wig takes 40 to 50 hours to make," SNL's hairstyling-department head Bettie Rogers was quoted by the New York Times as saying. "We read the sketches on Wednesday night to determine the wigs to be built at Bob Kelly’s, a wig maker on 46th Street. The ladies who make the wigs work around the clock until Friday night, sometimes even late Saturday."

Having her facial features and glasses often compared to Palin's, Fey's look was completed with the "French twist with a '60s bouffant kind of thing, and bangs. … It's darker at the nape of the neck, and shows transitions to a lot of different colors," Rogers said.

"After Tina saw the wig on her head, she thought her ears stuck out," Rogers told the newspaper. "She wanted her ears glued back. That required the services of Louie the Makeup God. That was around the dress rehearsal, late in the day Saturday."

Even Sarah Palin, who watched the opening skit that kicked off the late-night show's new season last Saturday with the volume down, said the visual was impressive. Palin was on her campaign plane at the time, watching it behind a curtain. And well, since the volume was down, it's not like she had anything else to focus on.

"I watched it with the volume all the way down," Palin said. "I thought it was hilarious… The visual was spot on."
It turns out, Palin too believes there's a strong similarity between the two when it comes to looks, so close in fact that Palin once dressed as Tina Fey for Halloween.

"She thought it was quite funny, particularly because she once dressed up as Tina Fey for Halloween," her spokesperson Tracey Schmitt told CBS News.

In the clip, which also starred Amy Poehler as Hillary Clinton, the two pleaded for an end to sexism in the presidential campaigns.

Now Fey, who made a comeback on the show where she had been a writer and a star from 1997 to 2005 before going on to further comedic glory as the writer and star of "30 Rock," left everyone wondering if she'll be back for more.

One person who won't be doing any wondering is John McCain whose advisor Carly Fiorina spoke out against the comedic impression on MSNBC, claiming that the “Saturday Night Live” cast painted Palin as un-substantive.

“Just because Sarah Palin has different views than Hillary Clinton does not mean that she lacks substance,” Fiorina stated, calling the portrayal “disrespectful” and “sexist.”
