A company from Detroit
has voluntarily recalled about 13,150 pounds of various cuts of ground beef and
steak products that may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria, the United States
Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced
Saturday.
According to officials, the steaks and ground beef were produced
at Mark’s Quality Meats Inc. on December 20, 21, 24 or 26 and were distributed
to restaurants in the metropolitan Detroit
area.
The agency said the problem was discovered after Mark’s
Quality Meats submitted a product sample that tested positive for E. coli bacteria
at a third-party laboratory.
Michael Layne, a Mark’s representative said some of the meat
has been consumed, but the products that were not, have been removed from the
restaurants and destroyed.
Officials from the Food Safety and Inspection Service said
they have no reports of illness related to these products so far. However, they
encourage people who consumed steaks or ground beef in Detroit area restaurants and are experiencing
an illness to contact a physician immediately.
Symptoms of E. coli contamination are bloody diarrhea,
vomiting, and abdominal pains. It can lead to kidney failure. Persons most at
risk in case of contamination with E. coli from the beef are children and the
elderly. The bacteria can be spread by person-to-person contact.
