David Beckham’s American dream was turning into a nightmare as the 32-year-old midfielder realized the horrific schedule he would have to confront if he wants to play for both country and club, but now the nightmare took another turn for the worse last night when he limped away from LA Galaxy's latest match due to a knee injury.
This injury makes the former England captain doubtful for England's two European Championship qualifying matches against Israel and Russia on September 8 and 12.
With Wayne Rooney also out of action with injury and with Kieron Dyer suffering a double fracture of his right leg on Tuesday night, England’s coach Steve McClaren has to figure out some winning moves for his already troubled team. England ranks fourth in its qualifying group for the European Championship.
The former Real Madrid midfielder fell awkwardly in the 30th minute of the game against Pachuca after challenging Fernando Salazar. Becks remained on the grass facing the ground for a few seconds before getting up and hobbling to the sidelines with the aid of the club physiotherapist where he had his knee bandaged, while the coach Frank Yallop sent on Alan Gordon as a replacement.
"It's just gone from one thing to another thing," the Englishman said after the game. "Maybe it is a sign to give it a rest, get it right and not come back until it is right.”
Beckham’s role in England’s squad is doubted since he transferred to Los Angeles. Many fear the extensive traveling schedule Beckham endures will leave him too tired to play at his full potential.
Last week he played for England in their 2-1 defeat to Germany at Wembley Stadium before flying back to the States for a Galaxy game against Chivas, also lost 3-0 although Beckham played a full 90 minutes. He has missed eight of Galaxy's 12 games since he joined the club on July 13.
