David Beckham became a real globetrotter in the past days, but his efforts weren’t enough to prevent England’s national team or LA Galaxy from losing in front of their home crowds.
On Wednesday, England scheduled a friendly match with their long-time rivals Germany on the new Wembley stadium. Coach Steve McClaren didn’t have all of his stars at full capacity for the game and decided it was time for Beckham to make his comeback and sent the midfielder on the pitch.
Becks struggled for 90 minutes, but his efforts remained hanging when Kevin Kuranyi took advantage of an error from goalie Paul Robinson and leveled eighteen minutes after Frank Lampard trashed the net’s roof with a powerful shot.
Five minutes before half time debutant Christian Pander leaves Robinson helpless as the ball swivels into the top right corner, 1-2 and failure was looming for McClaren’s boys.
That was the final score and Beckham flew back to Los Angeles with the bitter taste of defeat.
Thursday night he went on the pitch again in the “Super Clasico” and had to face a painful 3-0 defeat administered by rivals Chivas USA. Until half time there was no sign of the thunderstorm that was about to hit Galaxy, the scoreboard remaining unchanged.
Chivas striker Maykel Galindo needed 58 minutes to draw one up for his team after a blunder from defender Kyle Veris. Ten minutes later it was 2-0, the same prolific Galindo punching in after a swift counterattack and an accurate pass from Francisco Mendoza.
Mendoza closed the scoring with a perfect shot two minutes before the final whistle. It was the 10th victory for Chivas this MLS season and the ninth defeat in 17 games for Galaxy.
Everyone expected “one bit of magic by David,” as coach Frank Yallop said, but the 32-year-old midfielder didn’t take the spotlight this time. He was a little bit to nervous especially in the first half, when a late tackle by Jesse Marsch unleashed his anger. A scuffle broke out, but the referee quelled the outburst with two red cards seen by Galaxy’s Kevin Harmse and Chivas’ Alex Zotinca.
After scoring his first goal in the MLS, Beckham seemed to be the white knight in shinning armor for the ailing Galaxy, but all this fuss and long trips across the ocean look to have gotten the best of England’s former captain.
