David Beckham disappointed his fans in the US after failing to inspire his Los Angeles Galaxy team mates in the decisive match against the Chicago Fire. He was the only substitute for the Galaxy but he didn’t secure them a place in the MLS play-offs.

The Galaxy needed to win this march in order to get a place in the play-offs, but it all ended in disaster as John Thorrington scored for Chicago deep in injury time. It was a very tense match and no other player or fan felt it more intense than Fire’s Coach Juan Carlos Osorio

"I am 46 years old and after that game I feel like I'm 56 now," Osorio said. "I just congratulated everybody in the locker room and that's over. It is history and now we're in the playoffs."

Thorrington was assisted with a decisive pass by teammate Calen Carr. He found himself with the huge opportunity and made no mistake in putting it past Galaxy goalkeeper Joe Cannon. Thorrington tricked Cannon into coming toward him just enough for to chip the ball gently over the leaping goalkeeper.

Beckham, who was bought from Spanish Giants Real Madrid for an astonishing amount of $250 million, wasn’t at all in the mood for questions and thus refused to speak to the media after the match.

The Chicago Fire was the team which started the game offensive-minded and that paid off as in the first minute they had already had two corner kicks. A few minutes later they almost earned a penalty kick when forward Paulo Wanchope was tripped by Galaxy goalie Joe Cannon in the penalty area.

The Fire recorded a 22-5 edge in shots and a 10-1 edge in shots on goal against the Galaxy, thus making the Toyota Park record crowd of 21,374 that included new owner Andrew Hauptman very happy. Goalkeeper Matt Pickens recorded his club-record 10th shutout of the season.
