Bayern Can’t Use Toni, Nuremberg Also Faces Injury Problems

Bayern Munich’s recently bought forward Luca Toni is a doubt for the Bavarian team’s UEFA Cup first-round double against the Portuguese soccer team Belenenses on Thursday.

Fiorentina’s former striker still suffers from a thigh injury and he is still in the recovery phase.

"I am not 100 per cent. The final decision will be taken on Wednesday," he said.

"I want to be fully trained and be fit going into the game. The worse thing would be injuring myself again."

The Italian international had a perfect start for Bayern in their season opening match against FC Hansa Rostock, when he scored the Bavarians’ first goal in the 14 minute. But in the match against the Hanover side on 25 August he injured his thigh muscle while opening the score in the 28th minute. Toni recovered from that injury to play Bayern’s 1-1 draw with Schalke on Saturday, but things got worse.

Because of the thigh injury, the 30-year-old, 1,96 m and 94 kg striker also missed Italy's Euro 2008 qualifying matches against France and Ukraine

Bayern’s coach, Omar Hitzfield, is facing roster problems in the forwards compartment as his second lead scorer, Miroslav Klose, will also miss the first-leg match as he is serving a suspension after he received two yellow cards in his former team - Werder Bremen - UEFA Cup semi-final against Espanyol, which the Germans lost.

The other Bavarian side, German Cup winners Nuremberg, prepares for its first game in a European cup for almost 20 years and its coach also faces injury troubles.

Already without injured Danish defender Lars Jacobsen and Slovakian striker Robert Vittek, Coach Hans Mey isn’t sure whether he can count on midfielder Peer Kluge and strikers Ivan Saenko and Joshua Kennedy in his team’s clash with Romanian cup winners Rapid Bucharest.

Nuremberg are playing in Europe for the first time since being eliminated in the first round of the UEFA Cup by AS Roma in 1988 and although they seem to see the double with the Romanian side more as a formality, it could prove to be a tricky clash.

Rapid Bucharest had a great UEFA Cup performance two years ago and on their way to the quarter final lost to Steaua Bucharest eliminated other Bundesliga teams like Hamburger SV and Hertha Berlin, so they like playing the Germans.
