More and more voices predict that the fresh-baked blockbuster “The Dark Night”, which continues the Batman franchise, will prove to be a strong competition for “Titanic” after 10 years of the tear-dripping film’s dominance.
Starring Christian Bale as Batman and Heath Ledger as the Joker, “The Dark Night”, directed by Christopher Nolan, the author of other well-ranked films such as “Memento” and “The Prestige”, continues its strong run after four weeks on top of the sales at the box-office. This is the first film which resisted for so long after The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King“, released in December 2003.
Considering this, it is no wonder that “The Dark Night” already moved ahead of “Shrek 2”, “The Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” and “E.T” on the list of the all-time blockbusters, only two paces away from supremacy.
Dan Fellman, Warner’s head for domestic distribution is very optimistic: "By next weekend, we'll be in No. 2, ahead of 'Star Wars’”, he said, according to the L.A. Times. The science-fiction oldie currently holds the second place with a total of $461 million winnings, approximately $150 million less than “Titanic”. “The Dark Night” has today reached the sum of $441.5 million.
So, seeing this spectacular growth, the question is what could hold “The Dark Night” from sinking the “Titanic”. One answer might be that “The Dark Night” will be released on DVD in December and this will surely decrease the presence in movie-theaters, possibly leaving “Titanic” with the first place.
Only time will tell.
