According to The Wall Street Journal, Warner Bros. has announced some
movie releases based on its DC Comics properties and its intent is to
release as many as eight such movies per year by 2011. Apparently, president
Jeff Robinov made this decision based on the recent runaway success of the
studio’s “The Dark Knight.” Therefore, Batman may now help Superman make an
astonishing come back.
News of the reboot comes just two years after the Bryan
Singer directed “Superman Returns.”
"”Superman” didn’t quite work as a film in the way that we
wanted it to," Robinov said of Singer's version. "It didn't position
the character the way he needed to be positioned. Had “Superman” worked in
2006, we would have had a movie for Christmas of this year or 2009, but now the
plan is just to reintroduce Superman. We're going to try to go dark to the
extent that the character allows it."
Thus, by adding more to Singer’s interpretation they want to
go into a zone similar to one of a conflicted psyche.
Batman’s recent success opened the door for more DC comic
book films on the priority list for Warner Brothers, such as Flash, Wonder
Woman and Green Arrow.
"Superheroes are more global than ever in today's commercial
world, existing in 30 languages and in more than 60 countries," says Paul
Levitz, president and publisher of DC Comics. The characters are "a
world-wide export," he also explains.
Batman and Superman each have their own separate films and then
using these movies and their sequels they build up the multi-character heroes
they are now.
