Barrington Irving, 23, Sets World Record as Aviator

The 23-year-old Miami resident traveled around the world in a single-engine aircraft, in a little over 3 months, setting a record as the youngest person to have done so.

Irving arrived in Miami on Wednesday, after 97 eventful days spent in his aircraft, among the clouds. The aerospace student at Florida Memorial University had planned to complete his journey in 39 days but was thwarted by unfavorable weather.

He started his flight on March 23, departing from the Opa-locka Airport located near Miami. Along the way, he faced difficult weather conditions but never gave up his dream.

Barrington says he is the youngest person in the world to have flown around the world on hi sown, as well the first black person to complete such a journey. The 23-year-old was born in Jamaica and grew up in Miami.

His airplane, a Columbia 400, is named the “Inspiration.” Barrington has private and commercial licenses. He assembled his aircraft with the help of $300,000 worth of donations from manufacturers.

As he climbed out of his plane on Wednesday, Barrington told the crowd that had gathered to welcome and congratulate him: “I am home.”

The Florida Memorial University senior has founded Experience Aviation, a non-profit organization that encourages minority youth to pursue careers in aviation.
