British funnyman Sacha Baron Cohen will star in an upcoming
Columbia Pictures film as renowned detective Sherlock Holmes, with Will Ferrell
portraying his trusted assistant Dr. Watson.
The yet to be titled comedy will pair comedians Baron Cohen
and Ferrell as the world-famous crime-solving duo Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson,
inspired by Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes tales, reports trade paper
Variety.
While Warner Bros. is preparing a project of its own
featuring the classic literary characters, with British director Guy Ritchie
helming from a script by Anthony Peckham, this one will be comedic.
Columbia Pictures co-president Matt Tolmach told Variety
that “just the idea of Sacha and Will as Sherlock Holmes and Watson makes us
laugh,” explaining that the two actors “are two of the funniest and most
talented guys on the planet, and having them take on these two iconic
characters is frankly hilarious.”
The script will be penned by Etan Cohen (“Tropic Thunder”)
is writing the script, with Judd Apatow (“The 40-Year-Old Virgin” and “Knocked
Up”) and Jimmy Miller producing.
The Holmes project is an opportunity for many of those
involved to be reunited. Baron Cohen and Ferrell have acted opposite each other
before, as rival racecar drivers in “Talladega Nights,” released by Columbia to great success
in 2006. The comedy was produced by the same Apatow and Miller.
Baron Cohen most recently starred in Tim Burton’s “Sweeney
Todd,” a comedic role nonetheless, despite the waves of blood flowing
throughout the thrilling musical. The actor has been working on “Bruno,” based
on his character creation, a wacky fashion journalist.
Ferrell recently wrapped “Land of the Lost” for Universal
and next appears in “Step Brothers,” alongside “Tallladega Nights” co-star John
C. Reilly. The project also reunited him with director Adam McKay and producers
Apatow and Miller.
