Barcelona clinched the top spot in “La Liga” after defeating the bottom team Levante 4-1.
Recently transferred striker Thierry Henry had accumulated some frustration since the start of the season as he just couldn’t score. But against Levante he probably regained his confidence as he not only scored his first goal in the Spanish League, but recorded his first hat-trick as well.
"This was a really satisfying game," said the French striker, who said that despite what the local media said, he wasn’t "obsessed" with scoring his first league goal.
"It doesn't really matter who scores," he added, "what matters is that we carry on playing well - and winning."
After tree wins in a row FC Barcelona accumulated 14 points from six games, one point above long-time archrivals Real Madrid, who play away at Getafe on Sunday. Villarreal and Valencia share the third spot with 12 point apiece and will play Athletic Bilbao and Recreativo Huelva on Sunday.
Henry scored Barcelona’s opening goal and his first in the league in the 16th minute with a close range strike after Levante’s goalkeeper Marco Storari showed nervousness at the corner kick. Just seven minutes later he scored his second with a calm finish after Argentinean Lionel Messi provided the assistance.
The Catalans maintained the pressure and kept the ball in the adversary’s half of the field, thus the third goal was just a matter of time considering the brilliant offensive players Barcelona has. So the second half begun with Henry’s third goal, which came in the 48th minute, after the former Gunner controlled a pass from Portuguese midfielder Deco and put it past the goalkeeper at the near post.
The fourth goal came just two minutes later from Barcelona’s new hero, Lionel Messi. Argentina’s striker, considered by many to be the one who’ll reach Maradona’s level of brilliance, received a ball on the right, skillfully dribbled past two defenders and scored with his classy left foot.
Barcelona eased up after scoring the fourth goal, thus allowing Levante some breathing space. And the hosts didn’t took long to show their teeth as striker Cristian Rigano hit the post in the 69th minute and a minute later they were given a arguable penalty for a supposed foul by Carles Puyol on Alexandre Gijo.
Emilio Viquiera put away the penalty kick, giving the Levante fans something to cheer about.
