Rosie O’Donnell and Barbara Walters are competing for little
screen popularity once again. Each of the ex-coworkers hosted a television
special on Wednesday night, but only one of them managed to draw noteworthy
attention and… audiences.
“Rosie Live,” which was aired by NBC, saw Ms. O’Donnell poke
fun at her usual targets, including Donald Trump, Billy O’Reilly and Nancy Grace,
while the show was expected to pay tribute to television programs that used to
run in the ‘70s.
Rosie O’Donnell’s special, however, drew an anemic 5 million
viewers during the 8 p.m. hour and registered the night’s fifth smallest result,
following the ratings failure of the Peacock Network’s “Knight Rider,” which
drew only 5.2 million viewers last week.
Barbara Walters, on the other hand, hosted a very successful
show that featured an interview with President-elect Barack Obama and the
future first lady, Michelle Obama.
Thus, ABC’s “Barbara Walters Special” lured approximately
11.7 million viewers at 10 p.m., registering Wednesday night’s highest score
and effortlessly outshining both Rosie O’Donnell’s special and “Dirty Sexy
Money,” which was watched by a mere 5.6 million people.
CBS topped the evening with a bit of help from “Criminal
Minds,” for which 14 million viewers tuned in at 9 p.m. and “CSI: New York,” which
registered 12.2 million viewers at 10 p.m.
“Gary Unmarried” was watched by 7.7 million viewers, barely
surpassing “The New Adventures of the Old Christine," with 7.6 million viewers.
