According to a recent report, former First Lady Barbara Bush has been moved from ICU after undergoing heart surgery and is now recovering pretty well.

 

The 83-year-old wife of former President George H.W. Bush underwent a surgery intervention during which doctors replaced her aortic valve. The intervention took place at Methodist Hospital in Houston on Tuesday and it went as planed.

 

As hospital spokeswoman Gale Smith declared, Barbara Bush will remain in the intensive care unit of the hospital for at least another week, The Associated Press reported. The hospital spokeswoman said the former First Lady is well and on Saturday was on her feet walking, she was eating and in good spirits, which is a very good sign. 

 

“She’s still going great,” said the hospital spokeswoman.

 

The surgeon who performed the operation, Dr. Gerald Lawrie, was very pleased with the results so far and said Barbara Bush as “really made an excellent recovery.”

 

The former First Lady was taken to hospital after experiencing shortness of breath. Her medical team said she will most likely be released from hospital and go home sooner than expected, probably this week. 

 

The aorta is the largest artery in the human body and the principal path the heart uses to pump blood to the body. What Barbara Bush experienced – hardening of the valve – is a situation quite common for people at her age.
