Almost all major broadcast networks are set to air Barack
Obama’s half-hour campaign ad tonight. However, ABC will be “Pushing Daisies”
instead.
In an effort to shield its careworn Wednesday schedule, ABC tried
to convince the Obama campaign to run the commercial on a different night, the
Associated Press cited anonymous sources aware of the negotiations as saying.
However, when ABC decided to make space for the Democratic
presidential candidate’s ad, it was too late, as his campaign had already
completed the buy. Thus, the network has no other choice but air its “Pushing
Daisies” and go up against Barack Obama’s spot, which is due to be carried by
CBS, NBC and Fox among others.
The Obama campaign acquired the half-hour time on the three
above-mentioned networks for $1 million each. The commercial will air from 8
p.m. to 8:30 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, just six days before the much talked about election,
which will bring Barack Obama and John McCain in a face-to-face (or vote-to-vote)
confrontation.
The 30-minute spot will portray “the specifics of Obama’s
plans to turn the economy around and get the country back on track,” according
to a statement released by campaign spokesman Nick Shapiro.
Evidently, brief political ads represent the widely
acknowledged method used by politicians in their indirect dialogues with their
potential voters. And Barack Obama has proved very talkative in these so-called
discussions. As his fundraising has reached $600 million, he is able to
transmit his messages nationwide without being forced to count every penny. Throughout
October, the Democratic presidential candidate’s campaign bought approximately
$1.8 million worth of ad time on ABC’s schedule only.
The half-hour spot on Wednesday is due to run on Univision,
BET, MSNBC and TV One as well.
