President-elect Barack Obama is scheduled to announce later today his full national security team, which includes Senator Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, during a press conference in Chicago, Illinois, at about 10:40 a.m. ET.
It is expected that Obama will keep Robert Gates in his current post as Defense Secretary and also name Marine General Jim Jones as the White House’s national security adviser. Susan Rice is believed to become the new United Nations ambassador, Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano will take the post of homeland security secretary and Eric Holder will be attorney general.
"There's a lot of people in Washington that feel relieved. These are known quantities, they've been around for a while," said CNN senior political analyst Bill Schneider on CNN's "Late Edition Sunday." "And there's criticism. Some on the left say, 'Wait a minute -- we voted for change.'" This statement ilustrates some people’s belief that the significant change presented during the election will not happen quite as quickly as anticipated.
These complaints and critics were addressed by Obama in a recent statement: "What we are going to do is combine experience with fresh thinking. But understand ... the vision for change comes first and foremost ... from me. That's my job," he said.
There is still a lot of uncertainty about the path that will be chosen to complete the many promises made during the campaign, or even if there will be enough time to properly cover at least a part of them.
The event will be covered live by CNN and CNN.com.
