Barack Obama’s presidential campaign is becoming ubiquitous. Of course, all drivers are used to see giant billboards saying “vote somebody!” on the side of the road, but Obama’s presidential campaign has penetrated the virtual world as well.
You don’t have to have a license and drive on the real road to see the billboards. Just play “Burnout Paradise” on Xbox 360 and, at some point the video game, you’ll spot a giant billboards telling you "Early Voting Has Begun. VoteForChange.com."
Electronic Arts, the company which produces the very popular video game, confirmed the ads on Monday and said that the Obama campaign purchased them.
EA spokeswoman Holly Rockwood explained the quite unusual advertising strategy for a political campaign on tech blog GigaOm:
"Like most television, radio and print outlets, we accept advertising from credible political candidates. Like political spots on the television networks, these ads do not reflect the political policies of EA or the opinions of its development teams."
Voteforchange.com, the site address which appears under Obama’s name, is a Web site run by Obama For America.
However, the idea of advertising in the virtual world of video games and not only those isn’t a new concept at all. But political advertising in the virtual world it’s a first.
