Chinese aspiring actress Bai Ling was officially charged with petty theft following her arrest last month at the Los Angeles International Airport for allegedly stealing $16 worth of goods consisting of two celebrity magazines and a pack of batteries from one of the terminal gift shops, a spokesman for the L.A. City Attorney confirmed on Monday.
"(She) was charged based on an arrest that occurred Feb. 13 at LAX where she stole two Star magazines and a package of batteries," spokesman Frank Mateljan told People.com, adding the value of the theft was $16.22.
If convicted, the actress and frequent partygoer could face a maximum $250 fine. She is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at the Airport Branch Courthouse, where she can either contest the charge or pay up.
"There's no jail time associated with that amount," Mateljan said.
Shortly after the incident, Ling told E!News that she and her boyfriend just split and she hadn't been herself when the incident occurred because she was dealing with "the huge problem of breaking up."
"What happened was an innocent mistake on my part and I am confident that the truth will be told since I never had any intention of taking items without paying for them," the 37-year-old actress, who has appeared in such films as "The Crow" and "Anna and the King," wrote on her blog without giving further details.
